Quotations from MPs' Letters of Support A-M(8168 total words in this text) (1906 Reads) Quotations from Messages of Support by MPs for the reopening of the rail link between Skipton and Colne
Posts as of time of quote unless labelled ‘former’
Patrons:
Nigel Evans MP (Ribble Valley) ’I am fully in support of the moves to re-open the Skipton – Colne Railway line as part of the national network. I commend the on going work of SELRAP and the campaign has my full backing. When we are trying to encourage commuters off the road and on to other forms of transport - a commitment to a project like this by all those involved would be a clear indication of this intent and I know it is heartily supported by the wider community.’
Anne McIntosh MP (Vale of York) “I am delighted to lend my support as a patron of the Skipton-East Lancashire Rail Action Partnership. I am a great supporter of Community Railways, and feel strongly about re- instating local Community Railways wherever possible and appropriate. Destinations over the border become more accessible with an easy route to Leeds, Bradford and other conurbations in Yorkshire, giving a boost to the economies of the towns along the route as the opportunities for business, tourism and leisure in the area would be significantly increased.
As well as offering local people the chance to frequent shops, markets and tourist destinations along the route, the revival of this line would inevitably mean more visitors were attracted to these towns and cities. The Colne-Skipton line would open up local attractions and the surrounding countryside, allowing more people to learn about the area, the natural environment and enjoy some of the world’s most beautiful green spaces.
As roads become more and more congested and we try to combat the effects of Climate Change, railway lines like this one would cut the need for so many journeys being made by car. Making both short and long journeys by rail brings an important opportunity to cut carbon emissions and make travelling for work and leisure purposes more environmentally friendly and enjoyable.” Shadow Minister for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, Chair All Party Rail Group
Gordon Prentice [Pendle MP 2005-10 Parliament]
'Selrap has done a great job on raising public awareness and getting local authorities to sing from the same song sheet. There is a huge coalition of support for reinstatement of the railway; the cost of bringing it back would be relatively modest; it would open up new economic and recreational opportunities for people on both sides of the regional border'
Julian Smith MP (Skipton & Ripon)
‘I support SELRAP because I believe it will bring very positive environmental and economic benefits to Skipton & Ripon & beyond – I also commend the committee for their professional and well run campaign.’
Andrew Stephenson MP (Pendle)
‘Thank you for the letter and the kind invitation to become a Patron of SELRAP.
I would be delighted to take up such a role for SELRAP and hope to do everything I can to progress the cause.’
Other MPs:
Peter Aldous MP (Waveney)
‘All the best for your campaign to re-open the railway between Burnley/Colne and Skipton.
Representing a constituency that in many respects is similar to your own area, I recognise and support such an initiative that will be of benefit to both individuals and businesses.’
Danny Alexander MP (Inverness, Nairn, Badenoch & Strathspey) via Nick Davies ‘Mr Alexander would like to offer his support and wishes you the best of luck in your campaign to re-open the Colne to Skipton railway.’
Dave Anderson MP (Blaydon)
‘I am happy to support any developments that utilise one of our greatest assets. We must do more to encourage the development of quality public transport and this project fits the bill’
Janet Anderson MP (Darwen and Rossendale)[2005-10 Parliament]
‘I am very happy to be of help in any way I can’
Norman Baker MP (Lewes) ‘I am sure that the line would be of great benefit to local people, the economy and the environment.’ and
“We have identified 14 lines which we think should be reopened without any further delay. You
will not be surprised to learn that Colne-Skipton is in there!”
Shadow Secretary of State for Transport
Gordon Banks MP (Ochil & South Perthshire) ‘The modern world is challenged by climate change and global warming issues, so it seems only natural to promote the benefits to come from a fully comprehensive and interconnected transport system. Re-opening lines such as the Stirling – Alloa – Kincardine and the Colne – Skipton are examples of how public transport networks can reduce the number of cars on our roads and thereby help to reduce damaging carbon output.’
John Battle MP (Leeds West) [2005-10 Parliament] ‘ I believe restoration of the rail link would provide significant benefits to both the North West and Yorkshire regions, particularly in opening up employment opportunities and helping to provide closer economic links’
Hugh Bayley MP (City Of York)
‘I agree strongly about the environmental advantages of rail over road.’
Sir Alan Beith MP (Berwick-upon-Tweed)
‘I would be delighted to see the Colne to Skipton railway re-opened as part of the National Rail Network.’
Rt Hon Hilary Benn MP (Leeds Central)
‘I support, and wish you every success, in your campaign for the reinstatement of the Colne to Skipton rail link.’
Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs
Richard Benyon MP (Newbury)
‘I am happy to send my support to this campaign’
Parliamentary Under Secretary of State at the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs
Lucian Berger MP (Liverpool, Wavertree)
‘Please add my name to your campaign.’
Clive Betts MP (Sheffield Attercliffe) via James Thomas
‘Clive Betts MP is more than happy to be added to the list of supporters.’
Gordon Birtwistle MP (Burnley)
‘I support this campaign.’
Tom Blenkinsop MP (Middlesbrough South & East Cleveland)
‘I was aware of Ashok's* support for your ambitions and for a revitalised rail network across the North and I would continue that support’ [reference to Dr Ashok Kumar, previous MP for the constituency]
Paul Blomfield MP (Sheffield Central)
‘Please add my name to the list of those who are supporting the re-opening of the railway line between Skipton and Burnley/Colne. I would be obliged if you could keep me updated on the progress of the campaign and notify me of any forthcoming events.’
David Blunkett MP (Sheffield, Brightside & Hillsborough)
‘I am very happy to lend my support to the campaign to re-open the railway. It is a wonderful part of the world and would be truly scenic – as it used to be’
David Borrow MP (South Ribble) [2005-10 Parliament]
‘I look forward to you keeping me up to date with developments in the campaign’
Graham Brady MP (Altrincham and Sale West) ‘The restoration of the Skipton to Colne railway would enable people to travel easily between the North West and Yorkshire and Humberside. At a time when environmental concerns are so high on the agenda, restoring the missing 11.5 miles of railway line as part of the National Rail Network would ease congestion on local roads and provide an artery between the two regions.’
Tom Brake MP (Carshalton & Wallington) ‘I am writing to support your campaign as I am in full support of any motion that would include the devolution of powers to have local councils re-open railways. It is indeed true that England ought to re-open railways as well. There is no reason why we should be lagging behind. I hope that this campaign will inspire the necessary changes to help England close that gap.’ Shadow Minister for Home Office & vice-Chair All Party Rail Group
Colin Breed MP (South East Cornwall) [2005-10 Parliament]Liberal Democrat Treasury Spokesman
‘Thank you for your letter with all its enclosures which I have looked through with great interest. I am a great supporter of a modern railway network and in particular for restoring some of the previously lost lines. I will be only too pleased to add my support to your campaign, together with that of my colleagues and I wish you every success.’
James Brokenshire MP (Old Bexley & Sidcup) ‘May I wish you all success with your campaign which I am sure is most worthwhile.’ Shadow Minister for Home Affairs
Andy Burnham MP (Leigh) ‘I am pleased to offer my support, and would like to take this opportunity to wish you every success I your efforts’ Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport
Alistair Burt MP (North East Bedfordshire) ‘I am fortunate to have been made a life member of the North East Lancashire Railway, the revival of which did so much for the area to the north of Bury, which I represented in Parliament between 1983-1997…I would be very happy to support you, and the best thing I can do is to talk to my colleagues Nigel Evans and Michael Jack, and see how best I can assist.’ Opposition Assistant Chief Whip
Sir John Butterfill MP (Bournemouth West) [2005-10 Parliament]
‘I am happy to support the campaign for the opening of the line’
Rt Hon Stephen Byers MP (North Tyneside) [2005-10 Parliament] ‘I am very happy give my support to your campaign to re-open the Skipton to Colne railway.’ former Secretary of State for Transport
Vincent Cable MP (Twickenham) ‘I am happy to support in principle the reinstatement of the Colne to Skipton rail link as part of the National Rail Network. I agree that the reopening is important to the region, improving mobility and helping reduce road congestion. However, it is up to the Department of Transport to determine whether this is feasible.' Liberal Democrat Deputy Leader and Shadow Chancellor of the Exchequer
Richard Caborn MP (Sheffield Central) [2005-10 Parliament] ‘I am very happy to add my name to supporters of the campaign to re-open the Skipton to Colne railway line.’ Minister of State
Alistair Carmichael MP (Orkney & Shetland) ‘As you rightly state in your letter, existing infrastructure on the Colne-Skipton line facilitates the reinstatement of the line. Reopening the line will undoubtedly ease traffic congestion and provide access for both residents and visitors in the region. The railway link would also contribute towards the regeneration of the area. As such, I fully support the reinstatement of the Colne to Skipton Rail link. Please do not hesitate to get back to me if you feel I can be of any assistance.’ Shadow Secretary of State for Northern Ireland and Scotland
Douglas Carswell MP (Clacton) 'Thank you very much indeed for your letter about the Skipton - East Lancashire Railway line. It seems a wonderful idea and I am happy to support it.'
Martin Caton MP, Gower
‘Pleased to support, please add my name.’
Ian Cawsey MP (Brigg & Goole) [2005-10 Parliament]
‘I would be happy to support you in reinstating the missing rail link especially as this will directly benefit my constituents. If you need any further assistance please do not hesitate to contact me.’
Colin Challen MP (Morley, Middleton & Rothwell) [2005-10 Parliament] ‘I am aware of this idea which I think is a good one…which would help revitalise our cross Pennine network.’ Chair, All Party Climate Change Group
Michael Clapham MP (Barnsley West and Penistone) [2005-10 Parliament] ‘I am writing to let you know that as a Member of Parliament representing a constituency in South Yorkshire I fully support the re-opening of the Skipton-Colne line. It would benefit my constituents who wished to make the journey to Liverpool by train and I agree with the statement in your newsletter about the additional employment and visitor spend.’

Rt Hon Tom Clarke MP (Coatbridge, Chryston & Bellshill)
‘Please accept my support for your campaign for the reopening of the Colne to Skipton missing rail link as part of the National Rail Network.’
Nick Clegg MP (Sheffield Hallam) ‘The work and dedication of SELRAP to reinstate the Colne to Skipton rail link is highly admirable. The success of this project will create new business and regeneration opportunities for the surrounding area. This will also bring untold benefits to the local people of Lancashire and Yorkshire. I am very pleased to put my support behind this project.’ Liberal Democrat Leader<
Harry Cohen MP (Leyton and Wanstead) [2005-10 Parliament] ‘With the crisis the world potentially faces from pollution and global warming, rail travel could go some way towards reducing road traffic and I turn, reduce damaging carbon emissions. I am very supportive of your campaign to re-open the Skipton to Colne railway line.’
Rosie Cooper MP (West Lancashire) ‘Please accept this letter as an indication of my support for your project to reinstate the railway line between Skipton and Colne. I fully understand the importance of rail to opening up social, cultural and economic opportunities for communities that would otherwise be isolated. There are many similar rail projects, including one in my own constituency, that will be hoping for a successful outcome to this campaign.’
Jeremy Corbyn MP (Islington North) ‘I note the very wide political support SELRAP has attracted, and strongly agree with your request that the Skipton to Colne railway line be reopened. You are also absolutely correct in your observations that pollution and global warming know no borders, and I am happy to have my name added to your list of supporters.’
Sir Patrick Cormack (South Staffordshire) [2005-10 Parliament]
‘I am glad to add my name to those who are supporting your appeal and I wish you well.’
David Crausby MP (Bolton North East)
‘I am very happy to add my support to SELRAP’s campaign. I feel sure that there would be significant benefits to the North West and Yorkshire regions if the rail link were to be restored and if there is anything I can do please do not hesitate to contact me’.
Mary Creagh MP (Wakefield)
‘The enclosed newsletter was very interesting, and I must confess that I have not been aware of this campaign before now as it is some distance from Wakefield. However I would be happy to support the campaign, as I am a great believer in rail travel and would like to see the development of more community rail projects in the UK.’
Mike Crockart MP (Edinburgh West)
‘As Parliamentary Candidate for the Liberal Democrats for Edinburgh West, I am happy to sign up to this.’
Ann Cryer MP (Keighley) [2005-10 Parliament]
‘Such a reinstatement would give rail travellers in East Lancashire and West Yorkshire a much improved rail service and, dare I say, a greater choice – precisely what the Government claims to be seeking for us in so many areas of our lives. I promise I shall become an enthusiastic user of the service as and when the line reopens.’
John Cryer MP (Leyton and Wanstead)
‘Thanks for your message. Of course, I am very happy to back your campaign. Taking it out in the first place was sheer lunacy.
I grew up in Keighley and my dad was involved in trying to stop that closure, among others. I was frequently one of those passengers who had to change to a bus to cross the Pennines.’
Jim Cunningham MP (Coventry South) ‘Please regard this letter as one of support for the reopening of the Skipton - Colne railway line. The argument advanced is strong… I am of the view that we do not make the most of our railway network. Here in Coventry the rail system does not contribute as it might to the economic life between Coventry, Nuneaton and south Warwickshire.’
Tony Cunningham MP (Workington) 'I am a great believer in the further development of our rail network and want to wish you every success in your campaign to re-open the Skipton to Colne railway.' Government Whip
David Curry MP (Skipton & Ripon) [2005-10 Parliament] ‘Re-opening the artery between major economic centres on either side of the Pennines has to be for the common good’ and “I am delighted to reaffirm my support for the campaign to reopen the Skipton-Colne railway. And been struck by the degree of support for the project, the efficient marshalling of that support and the very impressive assessment of relevant economic and social data”
Nic Dakin MP (Scunthorpe)
‘I am happy to support the ambition in your email of reopening the Colne to Skipton rail link. Clearly I do not know of the costs or other implications that may need to be navigated to bring this about and I am well aware that politics is the art of putting priorities in an order. Best wishes with your campaign.’
Philip Davies MP (Shipley)
‘I am more than happy for you to add my name to your list of supporters’
Janet Dean MP (Burton) [2005-10 Parliament] ‘I am very happy to support your campaign to re-open the Skipton to Colne railway. I would like to congratulate you on the strength of your campaign and the tremendous community involvement you have achieved, including the organisations like the Burnley Play Association. I am sure that the re-opening of the line would benefit all sections of the community, particularly those without access to a car.’
Jim Devine MP (Livingstone) [2005-10 Parliament]via Danny Gibson ‘Jim has read the information you sent to the office, and would be happy for you to add him to your list of supportive MPs.’
Jim Dobbin MP (Heywood and Middleton) ‘I write to offer my support in your campaign to re-open the Skipton to Colne railway line. This would be a huge advantage to those who live in the area and of course as you are aware it would be an environmentally friendly way of travelling. I would love to see this line made available to encourage tourists and residents to enjoy the pleasure of rail travel through a beautiful part of our region. It would in addition provide employment for those who live in the area. I wish you every success and if I can be of any help, please let me know.’
Frank Dobson MP (Holborn & St Pancras)
‘I am supportive of this effort to reconnect parts of our rail network. If there is anything more you would like me to do on this issue, please do not hesitate to contact me again.’ former Shadow Secretary of State for Transport
Brian Donohoe MP (Central Ayrshire)
‘I support ANY reopening of railway infrastructure if the 'business plan'
for the project stacks up.’
Jim Dowd MP (Lewisham West and Penge)
‘Thanks for your message and I'm happy to support your campaign.’
David Drew MP (Stroud) [2005-10 Parliament] ‘I look forward to hearing of the success of your campaign before too long!’
Jane Ellison MP (Battersea)
‘How nice to hear from you again. I remain a great rail enthusiast and the seat I hope to win tomorrow has a very famous station in it, Clapham Junction.
I would be delighted to reaffirm my support for SELRAP's objectives; the only note of caution I would add is that debt mountain a new (hopefully) government will inherit is enormous. However, I was always persuaded of the economic case for the reopening of the line and I am sure SELRAP will keep making it.
If I am elected you might be interested to know that I have listed Transport as one of my areas of special parliamentary interest so perhaps we may speak again some time in the near future. Great to see you had Stephen Hammond speaking recently, I know him well and we share an office down here.‘
Louise Ellman MP (Liverpool Riverside)
‘I support your efforts to re-open the Skipton to Colne line and wish you every success’ Chair, Transport Select Committee
Tobias Ellwood MP (Bournemouth East) ‘Please accept this letter as an indication of my support for your project to reinstate the railway line between Skipton and Colne. I fully understand the importance of rail to opening up social, cultural and economic opportunities for communities that would otherwise be isolated.’ Shadow Minister for Culture, Media and Sport
Jeff Ennis MP (Barnsley East and Mexborough) [2005-10 Parliament] ‘It gives me the greatest of pleasure to write this letter of support for the re-instatement of the Colne to Skipton rail link. As a geography student from Bristol Redland College I spent many happy field trips in this beautiful part of the world. There is no doubt that if we re-establish this link, it will act as a massive boon to the tourist industry in both Yorkshire and Lancashire.’
Bill Esterson MP (Sefton Central)
‘I support the campaign.’
Bill Etherington MP (Sunderland North) [2005-10 Parliament] ‘will support.’
Jonathan Evans MP (Cardiff North)
‘I add my support to that of my colleagues. I hope you will find this helpful.’
Nigel Evans MP (Ribble Valley)
Patron: see above
Tim Farron MP (Westmorland & Lonsdale) ‘The gathering of support that you have already achieved speaks volumes for your energy and for the intrinsic merit of your proposal. Although I cannot see immediate and direct benefits to my constituents, I would wish to send my total support for the principle that any re-development of rail routes can only benefit local residents, travellers and the environment.’ Shadow Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs
Frank Field MP (Birkenhead)
‘I am happy to write this letter of support for the reinstatement of the line between Skipton and Colne which, if undertaken, would provide an important connection between communities in the area and other regions, particularly the more prosperous area of West Yorkshire.’
Michael Foster MP (Hastings & Rye) [2005-10 Parliament]
‘It seems a worthy cause and I have therefore contacted the Minister to lend my support. I hope that will help.’
Yvonne Fovargue MP (Makerfield)
‘Please add my name to the list of those supporters campaigning for the reopening of the Colne to Skipton missing rail link.’
Mike Gapes MP (Ilford South) ‘I’m glad you remember our train service in Ilford. I hope that we will get a better service when Crossrail is built. I’m very pleased to send my support to your campaign and wish you every success in your efforts.’ Chair All Party Crossrail Group
Andrew George MP (St Ives)
‘I wish you the very best of success. We are seeking to achieve much the same thing in an area of my constituency. I am a strong supporter of the rail service and keen to see further investment in those lines which will benefit the general public and our environment.’
John Glen MP (Salisbury)
‘I agree with Robert’s* comments.’
[* Robert Key, previous MP for Salisbury wrote:
‘Massive investment in railways joining major urban centres provides an essential rail travel spine for our country.
Unless it also includes the modest, cross-country rural railways that hold the fabric of our nation together, our railway system cannot possibly be described as a National Rail Network.
That it why it is important to maintain – and consider reopening – branch lines that have been closed for nearly forty years. Accordingly, I warmly support your campaign to reopen the Skipton to Colne line.’]
Paul Goggins MP (Wythenshawe & Sale East) ‘I am happy to support the campaign to reopen the Skipton to Colne rail line. The reopening of this line would benefit many people living in the North West, giving residents improved rail access to Yorkshire and Humberside. It is important that we continue to improve public transport across the region and I hope that your project is successful. I would be grateful if you could add my name to your list of supporters and may I wish you the best of luck with your campaign. If I can be of any further assistance please do let me know.’ Minister of State, Northern Ireland Office
Zac Goldsmith MP (Richmond Park)
‘I’m sure that the re-opening of the lines would provide a boost to public transport in the area, not only making it easier for those without a car, but providing an alternative for those with a car. I will happily give my support to this campaign.’
Julia Goldsworthy MP (Falmouth and Cambourne) [2005-10 Parliament]
‘I am happy to add my support to this campaign and wish you every success with it’
Liberal Democrat Shadow Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government
John Greenway MP (Ryedale) [2005-10 Parliament] ‘If you would like me to pen a small piece for your next magazine please do let me know.’ and ‘The success of the North York Moor Railway demonstrates the huge potential of restoring rail links in rural communities. This privately managed railway currently runs from Pickering in my constituency through to Grosmont, where it links with the Esk Valley public railway which runs between Middlesborough and Whitby. We have long expressed the wish to restore the link between Pickering and the York to Scarborough line at Rillington near Malton. There is a sound case for doing so.
However the arguments in favour of linking Skipton and Colne are even more convincing. With a mixed urban and rural population of some 180,000 people the potential for passenger numbers needed to sustain the financial and business case for this project is self-evident. I’m also convinced that more and more people are now enjoying rail travel for leisure, and will in the future be looking for ways to be less dependent on their cars.
I can only wish the SELRAP campaign every success. As other parliamentarians have said it is long overdue that this should become a political priority for both Government and the regional bodies responsible for investment in transport infrastructure.’
Lilian Greenwood MP (Nottingham South)
‘I would be very happy to support your campaign for the reopening of the Colne to Skipton rail link. It's a beautiful part of the country and I'm sure it would prove a popular and beneficial move. Good luck.’
John Grogan MP (Selby) [2005-10 Parliament] ‘It is my belief that the restoration of the line will open up a whole variety of exciting business opportunities as well as strengthening the connection between Yorkshire and Lancashire and therefore I am happy to endorse this project.’
Andrew Gwynne MP (Denton and Reddish)
‘I would be grateful if you could add my name to your list of supporters and best of luck!’
David Hamilton MP (Midlothian)
‘Please add my support to your campaign.’
Mike Hancock MP (Portsmouth South)
‘I am more than happy to add my name to your campaign. The case you make is absolutely sound, and it amazes me that you have not yet found support within the DpT for it. I will also attempt to ask a parliamentary question when the House reconvenes tomorrow and I will pass on any answer as it arrives.’
Richard Harrington MP (Watford)
‘Thank you for writing to me about this matter. I would be more than happy to support the reopening of this missing rail link.’
Nick Harvey MP (North Devon) Liberal Democrat Shadow Secretary of State for Defence via Monica Allen
‘Nick Harvey supports the re-opening of the Colne-Skipton Railway and is happy for you to add his name to your list.’
Chris Heaton-Harris MP (Daventry)
‘I am a huge advocate of economic development and it appears that such a scheme has the potential to bring about significant economic opportunities through tourism to the north of England. Similarly, such a scheme would generate much needed jobs in these unquestionably challenging economic times and facilitate reductions in journey times. In this regard, I was already aware of the Stirling – Alloa and Ebbw Vale lines and the successes that they have witnessed, particularly in passenger usage terms.
Consequently, in principle, I am more than happy to support your campaign and wish you all the best in your ongoing efforts, although I am mindful of the challenging economic times in which we now live and which may understandably serve as a hindrance to you securing your goals in the next few years, given the direct impact upon sources of funding.’
John Hemming MP (Birmingham Yardley) ‘Happy to support your campaign.’
Mark Hendrick MP (Preston) ‘Please let me know how I can work with you to see this project realised’
David Heyes MP (Ashton-under-Lyne)
‘Your campaign seems to be going from strength to strength and I see that you have assembled a very long and impressive list of supporters. I should be grateful if you could also add my name in support of the SELRAP campaign.’
Julie Hilling MP (Bolton West)
‘Yes. I am happy to support your cause.
As the Senior Regional Organiser for TSSA in the North West, I am very keen to support development of our railways and, if I'm lucky enough to be elected as the MP for Bolton West, I will take that fight to Westminster.’
Sharon Hodgson MP (Washington & Sunderland West) ‘Please add my name to the list of supporters as I believe that anything to encourage the use of public transport is to be commended’
Philip Hollobone MP (Kettering) ‘It is essential, especially in this time of greater environmental awareness, that our national railway network is extended not shortened’
Paul Holmes MP (Chesterfield) [2005-10 Parliament] ‘With only 11.5 miles of missing railway, this situation can and could be relatively easily remedied. Transport is a critically important component to a region’s economy, and it is crucial that all transport options within a region be utilised. It is important to improve public transportation in order to relieve congestion for overcrowded streets and highways. A railway line would also help to cut back on carbon emissions which is increasingly essential to protect our environment.’
Kris Hopkins MP (Keighley)
‘Thank you for your letter relating to Skipton – East Lancs Rail Action Partnership. You have my full support. Good luck in making plans for the future!’
David Howarth MP (Cambridge) [2005-10 Parliament]
‘I am delighted to add my personal support for SELRAP and for the work it is doing to that of my parliamentary colleagues. Keep up the good work!’ Shadow Secretary of State for Justice
Rt Hon George Howarth MP (Knowsley) ‘Thank you for your letter of 2nd June 2008 seeking my support for the campaign to reinstate the Colne to Skipton rail link. Along with my colleagues, you have my complete support in your campaign. Good Luck.’
Lindsay Hoyle MP (Chorley)
'I can confirm to you that I do indeed support the re-opening of the Colne to Skipton railway line and have attended meetings regarding the project.'
Chris Huhne MP (Eastleigh) 'As you know I am in favour of increased rail use and accessibility. I am happy to support the work of SELRAP, and I wish you every success in your campaign.' Shadow Secretary of State for Justice and Lord Chancellor
Joan Humble MP (Blackpool North & Fleetwood) [2005-10 Parliament] ‘I am happy to support your campaign to re-open the Colne-Skipton railway. As the MP for Blackpool North & Fleetwood, I have been campaigning for some time to re-establish the rail link from Preston to Fleetwood. I therefore fully understand the importance of the need to improve our public transport system and the benefits to many people this would bring. May I take this opportunity to wish you every success in your campaign and if there is any assistance I can give, please do not hesitate to contact me.’ Vice-chair All-Party Tourism Group
Mark Hunter MP (Cheadle)
‘I would like to express my support for the reinstatement of the Colne to Skipton rail link and my admiration for the commitment to this cause by the volunteers of SELRAP. This project has great potential to benefit the local communities that it will link, providing easier access to major destinations such as Leeds and Manchester, whilst local businesses can only benefit as well from greater numbers of people visiting their areas. This is increasingly important as in light of rising fuel prices and greater environmental awareness people want to be able to turn to a reliable and extensive rail network. Furthermore, it makes sense to redevelop an existing site rather than make other provision requiring more expenditure and leading to greater environmental impact. With clear public support for the rail link as well as reasoned justification, it seems an obvious step for its reinstatement.’ Parliamentary Private Secretary to the Liberal Democrat Leader, Liberal Democrat Transport Deputy Spokesperson
Julian Huppert MP (Cambridge)
’I am delighted to support your campaign.’
Dr Brian Iddon MP (Bolton South East) [2005-10 Parliament] ‘Please do add my name to your list of supporters and I wish you all the best with your campaign.’
Eric Illsley MP (Barnsley Central)
'I fully support your efforts and I agree that both regions would greatly benefit should that stretch of line become operational again. Please keep me informed of your progress and let me know if I can assist you in your campaign.'
Rt Hon Michael Jack MP (Fylde) [2005-10 Parliament]
‘I would be delighted to support your campaign’ Chair Select Committee on Environment, Food and Rural Affairs
Cathy Jamieson MP (Kilmarnock and Loudoun)
’I am happy to lend my support to this campaign. I have been actively involved with local campaigns in my area to protect the line through Ayrshire to Stranraer, and for further improvements on the Glasgow - Carlisle line south of Kilmarnock. I know how important local rail services are to the economy and how they can boost rural tourism, as well as improving commuter journeys. I wish you well with the campaign and hope that I will have the opportunity to travel on the line when it is reinstated!’
Brian Jenkins MP (Tamworth) [2005-10 Parliament]
You have my full support for the re-opening of the Colne to Skipton missing rail link.
If you need me to provide anything further to help support your cause, please do not hesitate to let me know.
Diana Johnson MP (Hull North, Labour)
“I am very happy to support the reopening of the Skipton-Colne Rail Line, and hope your campaign will be a success. I also support your aim of re-opening the Todmorden Curve to allow direct services to Manchester. I wish you every success with your campaign and hope that the widespread support you have received will result in success” Assistant Government Whip
Graham Jones MP (Hyndburn)
‘I am a great supporter of the railways and support any initiative that will improve the network, especially one in Lancashire. Your efforts to bring this forward and seek to improve the railways are commendable.’
Lynne Jones MP (Birmingham, Selly Oak) [2005-10 Parliament] ‘This is just a short email to send my support for the SELRAP campaign.’
Martyn Jones MP (Clwyd South) [2005-10 Parliament] ‘In principle I am in favour of the reinstatement of the Colne to Skipton rail link.’
Barbara Keeley MP (Worsley) ‘I am happy to support your campaign and am very keen to improve public transport across the region. I really hope that your project is successful and I would very much like to see the Skipton to Colne line reopened. Please contact me if I can be of any further assistance.’ Assistant Government Whip
Paul Keetch MP (Hereford) [2005-10 Parliament] ‘I fully support the campaign for the reinstatement of the Colne-Skipton railway as part of the National Rail Network.’
Fraser Kemp MP (Houghton & Washington East) [2005-10 Parliament] ‘I very much support the expansion of Britain’s railway network to assist our economic growth and address environmental concerns as well as improving the public’s access to travel.’
Charles Kennedy MP (Ross, Skye and Lochaber) ‘Please accept this letter as indication of my unequivocal support for your campaign. I look forward with interest to hearing the developments in this project and wish you every success.’
Robert Key MP (Salisbury) [2005-10 Parliament] ‘Massive investment in railways joining major urban centres provides an essential rail travel spine for our country. Unless it also includes the modest, cross-country rural railways that hold the fabric of our nation together, our railway system cannot possibly be described as a National Rail Network. That it why it is important to maintain – and consider reopening – branch lines that have been closed for nearly forty years. Accordingly, I warmly support your campaign to reopen the Skipton to Colne line.’ former Under Secretary of State for Transport
Greg Knight MP (East Yorkshire) ‘I think the reinstatement of the rail link between Skipton and Colne is an excellent idea and the plan certainly has my support in principle.’
Susan Kramer MP (Richmond Park) [2005-10 Parliament]
‘It is ridiculous that more passengers use rail now than at any point since 1945, but that the network is now a fraction of the size. The Skipton-East Lancashire Rail Action Partnership is a fantastic example of what can be achieved when communities work together. I wish you the best of luck in your campaign.’ Shadow Minister for the Cabinet Office and Shadow Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster
Ashok Kumar MP (Middlesborough South and East Cleveland) [d. 2010] Member All Party Rail Group
‘Thank you for your recent e-mail on your campaign to re-open the railway alignment between Colne and Skipton.
I note your comments. I have already given my backing to this scheme following lobbying from fellow NW MP’s. I do have to say that progressing such a scheme has to be given impetus by them and by other NW interests such as the County Council and the North West RDA. I hope that is helpful to you.’
Norman Lamb MP (North Norfolk) ‘I am very happy to confirm my support for your ambition of re-establishing the 11.5 mile missing link between Skipton and Colne’ Shadow Secretary of State for Health
Mark Lazarowicz MP (Edinburgh North & Leith) ‘I am certainly happy to add my name in support of the campaign. The benefits of the re-opening would obviously be most immediately felt by residents in the area concerned, but it will also provides a useful addition to the national rail network in my view. I hope you will ultimately be successful in your campaign.’
Phillip Lee MP (Bracknell)
‘I am very pleased to offer my support for your campaign.’
John Leech MP (Manchester, Withington)
‘I am happy to add my support to the campaign.’ Shadow Minister for Transport
Ivan Lewis MP (Bury South)
‘I would be delighted to support your cause and I can see the benefits that would accrue from the re-instatement of the track. I am very much in favour of taking traffic off the roads and this project would appear to facilitate the use of public transport to and from the major conurbations of Manchester, East Lancashire, Skipton and Leeds. I would be grateful if you could keep me up to date with any future developments.’ Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for International Development
Tony Lloyd MP (Manchester Central)
‘This is an important link, connecting Northern Yorkshire and Northern Lancashire and will increase public access to many different areas all over the North. It is essential that this line operates for the benefit of people, not only in the North but all over the country.’ Chair Parliamentary Labour Party
Naomi Long MP MLA (Belfast East) Alliance Party Deputy Leader
‘I am writing to express my support for your campaign to have the railway line between Skipton and Burnley re-instated.
The Alliance Party is committed to increased investment in public transport infrastructure which would allow the economy to grow and provide a key public service. We believe that safe, effective and efficient transport is essential to the success of the economy, the protection of the local and global environment and the quality of life of local people. We are also committed to low carbon transport and would, therefore, like to see a greater use of rail to transport people and freight instead of relying on the road network.
If I can be of further assistance with this, or any other matter, please do not hesitate to contact me.’
Caroline Lucas MP (Brighton, Pavilion)
‘I am very happy to add my support to your campaign to re-open the Skipton to Colne railway line.
In particular, I welcome the prospect of more employment and leisure activities, which the re-opening of the line would bring, for those without any access to personal transport. The re-opening of the railway line would be a great opportunity to encourage more use of public transport.’
Ian Lucas MP (Wrexham)
‘I believe that opening up branch lines would make a significant contribution to public transport’ Assistant Government Whip
Denis MacShane MP (Rotherham)
‘Please add my name as a supporter’
Gordon Marsden MP (Blackpool)
‘In the wake of the Stern report and concerns about rural and out of town communities, particularly those who either do not have a car or cannot drive, it surely makes sense to reconnect the two regions of the North West and Yorkshire/Humberside by reviving this missing link. It would also incidentally benefit Blackpool, both in terms of our residents and visitors, in terms of widening their travel and leisure options across the region’
Eric Martlew MP (Carlisle) [2005-10 Parliament]
‘As someone with a keen interest in rail transport, being Chairman of the West Coast Main Line Group and Chair of the All-Party Rail group, I am very happy to support this initiative’ Chair All Party Rail Group, Chair West Coast Main Line Group
Paul Maynard MP (Blackpool North & Cleveleys)
‘More than happy to offer my support. Improving rail links across the North West, ensuring the Manchester/Northern Hub improvements occur, improving the way Community Rail Partnerships function, and exploiting the opportunities afforded by Open Access, are all a key priority for me having recently completed a study of transport policy across the North. I don't know whether you have strong links with the local Poulton & Wyre Railway Society which is campaigning to re-open the link to Fleetwood, but that is something which I support also - I already know a lot about SELRAP's successes, and I hope the PWRS can follow in your footsteps!’
Christine McCafferty MP (Calder Valley) [2005-10 Parliament]
‘[the reopening] would undoubtably benefit my constituents as well as the people of Skipton and East Lancashire’
Jason McCartney MP (Colne Valley)
’You have my support. We must invest more in high speed rail and local lines. I'm proud that the Conservatives are leading the call for high speed rail to West Yorkshire. As our roads clog up and crack up after the cold snap, investment in local rail links are making more economic sense.’
Rt Hon Ian McCartney MP (Makerfield) [2005-10 Parliament]
‘You have my wholehearted support for this campaign which makes a lot of sense, benefiting areas including the North West, giving easy rail access to Yorkshire and Humberside’
John McDonnell MP (Heyes and Harlington)
‘You have my full and wholehearted support for this proposal. My daughters live in Colne and I know the area well. The reopening of the line makes sound transport, economic, social and environmental sense’
Anne McGuire MP (Stirling)
‘Many thanks for your email, and I wish you the best of luck with the campaign.’
Anne McIntosh MP (Vale of York) Patron: see above
Catherine McKinnell MP (Newcastle North)
‘I would be delighted to add my support to your campaign.’
Austin Mitchell MP (Great Grimsby)
‘Yes, please count me as a strong supporter of the re-opening of the Skipton to Colne railway. I won’t make any jokes about bringing together two ancient civilisations in their traditional relationship of mutual loathing because the time for Lancs/Yorks rivalry is dead. We should have a common interest in developing this important transport link with all its environmental and social benefits.’
Penny Mordaunt MP (Portsmouth North)
‘Many thanks for contacting me, you have my support.’
Graeme Morrice (Labour PPC, Livingston)
‘Happy to support your campaign.’
Kali Mountford MP (Colne Valley)[2005-10 Parliament]
‘Thank you for your letter about the Skipton to Colne rail link. I am happy to give my support to the project and I was interested to read the newsletter that you enclosed.
I have to say, however, that I do have one caveat and that concerns the cost of the project and disability access to stations. There are still stations on existing routes that do not provide full access for people with disabilities and, for me, that must take priority for funding allocations.’
George Mudie MP (Leeds East) ‘I totally support your campaign about the reinstatement of the Colne to Skipton missing rail link and would be please if you would add me to your list of supporters. Anything I can do further, please do not hesitate to contact me.’
Greg Mulholland MP (Leeds North East) ‘I fully support the campaign to re-open the Skipton to Colne railway, so please do add my name to the list of supporters of the project.
It is clear that re-opening the railway would provide a vital, cost-effective transport link in the region, particularly in comparison with hugely expensive initiatives in the South of England such as the Crossrail project. It was time that there was much more parity in transport investment between the South East and the rest of the country, particularly when such viable solutions to transport problems such as the Colne to Skipton railway exist. I wish you the best of luck with the campaign, and I would be happy to give assistance I can.’ Shadow Minister for Health
Chris Mullin MP (Sunderland South) [2005-10 Parliament] ‘I am happy for you to add my name to the list of MPs supporting your campaign to re-open the Skipton to Colne railway line.’ former under Secretary of State for Transport
David Mundell MP (Dumfriesshire, Clydesdale & Tweeddale)
‘I am pleased to give my full support to the Partnership and in particular its aim of restoring full rail services between North Yorkshire and East Lancashire’
Shadow Secretary of State for Scotland & Vice-Chair All-Party West Coast Main Line Group
Meg Munn MP (Sheffield, Heeley) ‘I would like to give my support to the reinstatement of the Colne to Skipton rail link, as part of the national rail network. The need for greater public transport as well as increasing freight demands means that the railway remains a crucial part of this country’s transport network.
The government quite rightly has invested huge amounts in rebuilding and improving the national rail network in the last ten years. Your campaign is in keeping with that investment and the country’s transport needs.’
