Quotations from MEPs' Letters of Support(3689 total words in this text) (1934 Reads) CURRENT PARLIAMENT:
The Rt. Hon. Sir Robert Atkins MEP (North West): ‘Of course, you have my support and best wishes for the continuing campaign.’ Member of the Committee on Transport & Tourism
Catherine Bearder MEP (South East) via Sallie Barnard (Head of Office)
‘Catherine Bearder is very happy to offer her support to the Campaign to reopen the rail line between Colne and Skipton, enabling more people to use public transport and helping to reduce our CO2 emissions.’
Godfrey Bloom MEP (Yorkshire & Humberside): ‘Good luck in your quest to restore a Lancashire link to civilisation’
Sharon Bowles MEP (South East)
‘I enthusiastically support the reinstatement of the Skipton – Colne missing link. My 95 year old father lives in Skipton and during the bad weather this year some family members from Burnley and Nelson were unable to get to my mother’s funeral. So I share that frustration of local people and businesses as well as supporting the principle of encouraging public transport.’
Philip Bradbourn MEP (West Midlands)
‘I would like to add my name in support of your campaign to re-open the Skipton to Colne railway and wish you all the best in your future efforts.’
John Bufton MEP (Wales)
‘Thank you ever so much for the opportunity to express my support for the reopening of the Colne to Skipton missing rail link. This kind of initiative is a wonderful example of the hard work and dedication of the British people, both in the past and now in the present.
We are the Nation that introduced Railways to the World, and should preserve our heritage at every opportunity. I look forward to hearing of your success!’
Martin Callanan MEP (North East)
‘I do support this extremely worth-while project and wish SELRAP every success.’
Michael Cashman MEP (West Midlands): ‘I would like to offer my support for the campaign to re-link Yorkshire and Lancashire with Skipton and Colne. I agree the reinstatement of the missing link will provide a strategic route connecting the towns of Lancashire and the Leeds region. This would improve journey times and provide access to the gateway interchange at Preston. This would create employment opportunities arising from railway construction and operation of the railway. It would also encourage new business to the area along with the added leisure business using the railway. It will improve access to healthcare including specialist units in hospitals and higher education at college or university.’
Derek Clark MEP (East Midlands): ‘I always thought the Beeching cuts were a mistake. I think I was right. I very much support re-opening of useful railway lines and restoring rail transport where it will prove to be viable. Given that the pricing is right, as well as the time tabling, there is no doubt that such railway connections will prove to be of service to the community.
In this situation to re-connect two existing railway systems by restoring the Skipton – Colne line should be an obvious thing to do. With the track bed still intact and with modern rolling stock available it should not be a very difficult thing to do.’
Chris Davies MEP (North West): ‘The failure to accept that the rail system needs now to be expanded is short sighted. Local authorities on both sides of the Pennine Way need to start factoring the line into their transport strategies. The assumption should be: 'it is going to happen and this is the difference it will make'. Member of the Temporary Committee on Climate Change and the Environment, Public Health & Food Safety Committee
Andrew Duff MEP (East of England): ‘This country faces an enormous problem of clogged up transport systems as well as facing, like the rest of the world, the huge issues raised by global warming. In the absence of a clear lead from national governments, it is heartening to see local groups working towards practical contributions to the solution of these major problems. These problems are national and international in scope, and therefore projects such as yours are deserving of support both from your local communities and from those outside the immediate area who recognise the importance of this work. I am happy to count myself in that number.’
Jacqueline Foster MEP (North West)
‘I am aware of your work, not least through my discussions with Andrew Stephenson in Pendle. As a new MEP for the North West, and Conservative Transport Spokesman in the European Parliament, I am keen to support your campaign to reopen the line between Colne and Skipton. Please do keep in touch.’
Ashley Fox MEP (South West)
‘I am very happy to support your campaign and wish you all the best in the future.’
Fiona Hall MEP (North East): ‘The re-opening of the line would have significant benefits to the North West and Yorkshire and Humberside regions, as well as opening links to the North East region. Encouraging the use of rail travel is an important element in our fight against climate change and reducing CO” emissions from transport. I wish you every success in your campaign and look forward to hearing more about it in the future’ Member of the Temporary Committee on Climate Change
Malcolm Harbour MEP (West Midlands): 'I fully support SELRAP in its campaign to secure funding to reopen the Skipton-Colne railway. The reinstatement of this line would not only help local people's mobility but also would attract visitors to the area to see the many local attractions and beautiful countryside. It would be a real boost for the local economy. As roads become more congested and the need to cut carbon emissions more vital the expansion of our railway networks is now crucial. The opening of the Skipton-Colne missing rail link would play a large part in helping the economy and reducing our carbon footprint.
Good luck with the campaign.'
Roger Helmer MEP (East Midlands)
‘I should be happy to be listed as a supporter of the Colne & Skipton Railway Project.’
Mary Honeyball MEP (London)
‘I am happy to add my name. Good luck!’
Stephen Hughes MEP (North East): ‘I am all for better rail links between the regions and wholeheartedly support your campaign.’
Syed Kamall MEP (London): ‘I am more than happy to support the campaign to reopen the 11 mile missing rail link between Lancashire & Yorkshire. Good transport is essential for facilitating trade, improving the quality of our lives and connecting communities. I am sure that your perseverance will eventually pay off and that one day we will see trains running again on this line.
I hope that when this happens, you will invite me to the reopening of the line.’
Sajjad Karim MEP (North West): ‘I am extremely impressed by the momentum your campaign has taken on. This is perhaps unsurprising considering the strength of feeling surrounding the possible restoration of a transport link which would indeed contribute towards increased employment and leisure options for those people who have no access to a car or prefer not to drive.’
Timothy Kirkhope MEP (Yorkshire & Humberside): ‘I am delighted to become a Patron of SELRAP. The cause of bringing back into use the Skipton-Colne railway line is a very good one, especially as there is firm evidence that more people wish to travel by rail. And this route would make life easier for a considerable number of people. Like all proposals there is a need for not only goodwill from Politicians, but also a commitment to take action to ensure that the appropriate funding is in place. With a trackbed in place and ready to be re-laid, and with a clear demonstration of need, SELRAP cannot fail. As Conservative Transport spokesman in Europe I am personally committed to improving rail services for Yorkshire and The Humber.
I travel by rail from my home near Knaresborough on a regular basis and I value the infrastructure which is available to me. The SELRAP proposals make good sense. I am pleased to be associated with the organisation and will do whatever I can to help it achieve its aims.’ Member of the Committee on Transport & Tourism and the Temporary Committee on Climate Change
Jean Lambert MEP (London): 'If we are to tackle climate change and develop a truly sustainable approach to transport, it's crucial we put much more investment into railways and extend the rail network. If we are to reduce car dependency, rail has to become a more attractive, affordable and viable means of transport. That must mean correcting the errors of the past and reopening parts of the network that have previously been shut down. I'm therefore extremely pleased to add my voice to the campaign to re-open the Skipton to Colne railway, as part of the National Rail Network. I hope we get a positive result as soon as possible.'
Dr Caroline Lucas MEP (South-East England): ‘In particular, I welcome the prospect of more employment and leisure activities, which the re-opening of the line would bring, for those without any access to personal transport. The re-opening of the railway line would be a great opportunity to encourage more use of public transport.’ Member of the Temporary Committee on Climate Change and the Environment, Public Health & Food Safety Committee
Baroness Sarah Ludford MEP (London): ‘Even though I am not one of your local MEPs I would be delighted to join my Party leader and so many of my fellow MEPs and MPs in supporting the reinstatement of the Colne to Skipton missing rail link as part of the national rail network. Please do add my name to your list of supporters of SELRAP and send on my best wishes for a successful outcome to such an excellent campaign.’
Liz Lynne MEP (West Midlands)
‘I am delighted to support your campaign, and I would love to see the Skipton to Colne line re opened.’
George Lyon MEP (Scotland) via Flora Boyd, Office Manager
‘Mr Lyon is happy to send a message of support for the re-opening of the Colne to Skipton rail link.’
Linda McAvan MEP (Yorkshire & Humberside): ‘Restoration of the Skipton-Colne line will not only open up many more travel opportunities but has the potential to improve employment and leisure options for those who wish to use rail transport rather than road’ Member of the Temporary Committee on Climate Change and the Environment, Public Health & Food Safety Committee
Arlene McCarthy MEP (North West): ‘If we are to meet the challenges of congestion, pollution and global warming then we must ensure that public transport is made a priority. I therefore write this letter of support to re-connect the railway from Colne to Skiptonas part of the National Rail Network as soon as possible. This would provide not only a better rail service trans-Pennine but for the wider North West region as a whole.’
Emma McClarkin MEP via Neelam Cartmell, Assistant to Emma McClarkin MEP
‘I would like to confirm Miss Emma McClarkin MEPs support for this campaign.’
Edward McMillan Scott MEP (Yorkshire & Humberside): ‘I was impressed by the organisation and scope of support for this project… I would be more than happy to offer my support wherever possible’ Vice-President of the European Parliament
David Martin MEP (Scotland): ‘As a member of the European Parliament’s Environment Committee and an appointee on the Parliament’s Temporary Committee on Climate Change I am very supportive of and encouraged by your campaign. Provision of more public transport is an integral part of the fight against global warming and pollution. It is important to encourage commuters to switch to environmentally safer forms of public transport. I wish you well and look forward to your ultimate success as a contribution towards a sustainable transport policy.’ Member of the Temporary Committee on Climate Change and the Environment, Public Health & Food Safety Committee
Mike Nattrass MEP (West Midlands): ‘I certainly support your objective….I will help you as much as I can even though it does mean easy access for Lancastrians (bless them).' Member of the Committee on Transport & Tourism
Bill Newton Dunn MEP (East Midlands)
‘I have never been to either Colne or Skipton (and can't see any reasons I shall go to either in the near future).
But I don't mind adding my name in support.’
Paul Nuttall MEP (North West) via Nigel Brown, P.A. :
‘Paul Nuttall fully endorses his other UKIP MEP colleagues in supporting the efforts of SELRAP to re-open this link. UKIP beleives that the Government should be funding such projects to reduce road traffic and generate jobs and economic opportunities in the region. Paul will be fighting to ensure that the funding and therefore decision making, will be provided from the British taxpayer, without EU interference and red tape.’
Brian Simpson MEP (North West): ‘I write this letter of support to re-connect the railway from Colne to Skipton as soon as possible, as this would provide not only a better rail service for East Lancashire but for the wider North West Region as a whole’ and ‘With our railways at bursting point it is essential that our railway infrastructure receives the investment levels needed to ensure that they can do the job we require of them. In my role as the Socialist Group's Spokesman on Transport in the European Parliament I get to see at first hand how other countries provide services, not only domestically but internationally also. One factor that always emerges is that for any inter city or international high speed service to succeed it must be supported by well developed feeder services that link in the whole of a region to the railway network.
That is why Skipton to Colne is important. This is a missing link that when re-instatement occurs will not only link in with the railway network, but will also provide the stimulus for much needed economic regeneration and social mobility. This link is long overdue and it is about time something was done to put this situation right.’ Member of the Committee on Transport & Tourism and the Committee on Agriculture & Rural Development
Struan Stevenson MEP (Scotland) and Kathryn Stack (parliamentary Assistant): ‘I am writing to you on behalf of Mr. Stevenson to show our support for the reinstatement of the Colne to Skipton missing rail link as part of the National Rail Network.
Coming from Skipton myself, I completely agree that the link between Yorkshire and Lancashire through the trans-Pennine route must be re-opened. The stretch of railway is no more than 12 miles and its reinstatement would be of little cost and major benefit.
Please accept my thanks for your dedication to the campaign and I sincerely hope this can be achieved.’ Member of the Committee on Agriculture and Rural Development
Catherine Stihler MEP (Scotland): ‘I agree that the re-opening of this line will improve the travel options for those people who do not own cars and who rely on public transport for their employment and leisure needs.’ Member of the Committee on Transport & Tourism
Robert Sturdy MEP (East of England):
'Along with my colleagues I would like to add my support for the re-opening of the Skipton – Colne railway which will be of great benefit to many people. You have built up a strong campaign highlighting a very good case for re-instating this rail link and I hope you achieve the funding to bring this to fruition. I look forward to receiving further updates in the progress of this project.’
Vice-Chairman, International Trade Committee
Dr Charles Tannock MEP (London) via James Warwick (Parliamentary Assistant)
‘I am writing on behalf of Dr Tannock to convey his support for your excellent initiative. He is very happy to join his London colleagues and fellow Conservative MEPs in giving this sensible initiative his full backing.’
Diana Wallis MEP (Yorkshire & Humberside): ‘I am very pleased to be one of SELRAP's patrons. The campaign to reinstate the rail link from Skipton to Colne has gathered real momentum over the past couple of years so that there is now a real possibility of the rail line reopening. However we must keep the pressure on at all levels.’ Vice-President of the European Parliament
Graham Watson MEP (South West): ‘I am more than happy to add my support to your important campaign to re-open the trans-Pennine route. The impact of road use and congestion continue to affect both our environment and our communities, and the SELRAP program advocates a real alternative utilizing existing infrastructure. This initiative offers the possibility of improving our strategic rail network, and providing citizens with a more environmentally friendly mode of transport. These improvements would also offer the opportunity to bring communities from both sides of the Pennines closer together.’
Glenis Wilmott MEP (East Midlands): ‘I am delighted that the campaign is being successful and I am happy to add my support for the reinstatement of the Colne to Skipton missing rail link as part of the National Rail Network. I very much hope that the campaign is successful.’ Member of the Environment, Public Health & Food Safety Committee
Marina Yannakoudakis MEP (London) via Mark Walker, Head of Office
‘I am writing on behalf of Marina Yannakoudakis MEP. Marina would very much like to support your campaign, along with her fellow colleagues Syed Kamall MEP and Timothy Kirkhope MEP. The reopening of the Colne to Skipton rail link is a worthwhile cause and one which Mrs Yannakoudakis thinks would go a long way to help the regeneration of the local community.
She is therefore very interested in being kept informed about the progress of your campaign and to enquire whether there is anything else that she can do to help it.’
FORMER MEMBERS OF THE EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT:
Richard Corbett MEP (Yorkshire and the Humber): ‘I believe, as you do, that re-opening this line will create employment and bring economic and leisure benefits to Colne and Skipton’
Den Dover MEP (North West): ‘I am on the Transport and Tourism Committee of the European Parliament…I would be delighted to become a Patron’
Jonathan Evans MEP (Wales) ‘It would generally be the case that a Member of the European Parliament would not seek to intervene in matters which are local in nature and from outside their own area.
However, having looked closely at the issues in this case I am prepared to make an exception and add my support to that of my colleagues. I hope you will find this helpful.’
Robert Evans MEP (London):
‘Please add my name to the list of MEPs supporting the campaign to reopen the 11 mile missing rail link between Lancashire & Yorkshire.
Good Luck’ Member of the Committee on Transport & Tourism and Member of the Temporary Committee on Climate Change
Glyn Ford MEP (South West): ‘As a member of the European Parliament, I am very supportive of this campaign which offers an environmentally friendly means of public transport. The re-opening of this railway would be most beneficial to local residents, offering an alternative journey choice to those without access to a car. I have no hesitation in supporting this campaign.’
Neena Gill MEP (West Midlands): 'I would be happy to support your campaign to reinstate the Colne to Skipton rail link. Having read your literature I feel this is a very important campaign and would do a lot of good for your region. I wish you all the best in your campaign and if there is any further assistance I can offer please do not hesitate to ask.'
Glenys Kinnock MEP (Wales) ‘I am happy to add my name to SELRAP’s campaign to re-open the Skipton to Colne railway line as part of the National Rail Network.’
Roger Knapman MEP (South West): ‘I fully support this and am enthusiastic about the scheme. I would similarly support other rail reinstatement projects, including in my own South West region.’
Neil Parish MEP (South West): ‘I am very happy to support this campaign and very much hope that with your help, the Skipton to Colne railway can get up and running once more. As Chairman of the Agriculture Committee in the European Parliament I believe it is vitally important to ensure that we can provide good transport links to and from rural areas. I therefore very much support the campaign and hope that you can successfully get it up and running again.’ Chair of the Committee on Agriculture and Rural Development
David Sumberg MEP (North West): ‘I support the proposal and hope it meets with success'
Gary Titley MEP (North West): ‘such a move would significantly improve employment and leisure opportunities, not only in the immediate vicinity, but much further afield as well. The campaign has my full support.’
John Whittaker MEP (North West) via Gerald Kelley, PA ‘He is happy to stand alongside his colleagues, Godfrey Bloom and Mike Nattrass, in supporting your aims’
