I AM a member of the British Regional Transport Association (BRTA) – a small, unincorporated voluntary association with several of its projects having a nationwide positive benefit and impact.
We are very keen to see a rolling programme of local railway line reopenings for passenger and freight – and new stations on existing lines. We also campaign for an environmentally-friendly, integrated, comprehensive, inclusive and affordable transport system including buses, cycling and pedestrian facilities. Membership is open to all.
The BRTA would like to see the reopening of the Skipton-Colne railway line. This project will bridge a missing public transport link by joining the hearts of six big but isolated East Lancashire towns with the centre of Leeds and beyond in just one 11-mile stride.
The Skipton and East Lancashire Rail Action Partnership is advocating for this reinstatement project. A strong case is made, but so far it has proved elusive in terms of Government take up. The BRTA says the railway should be given the go-ahead now and the benefits enjoyed by people, the local economy and the environment.
This is supported by Arriva Northern Trains and Skipton Building Society, which both recognise that it will open up employment, educational and leisure opportunities throughout Lancashire and Yorkshire; it will also allow the possibility of a direct link to Manchester airport via stops from Shipley to Skipton.
